For many the Rosh Hashanah experience is one that must be endured rather than enjoyed. For some it’s the duration of the service more than the joy of being part of the service. We all know that when you invest effort into a project or activity, you enjoy it more, the experience is more fulfilling and you get more from it.
Therefore:
1. Before Rosh Hashanah , open the machzor and familiarise yourself with the different prayers, especially the Amida prayer. Understand what each bracha is communicating. Make notes in your machzor to remind yourself. Then before reading the words, you can think about the idea and consider what the world would look like if this was the reality.
2. Remind yourself that Hashem understands all languages, if the Hebrew is difficult, use English.
3. Join in the service, sing the tunes that you know, don’t be a spectator be a participant.
4. Take personal responsibility for those around you. Help create a focussed spiritual atmosphere so that everyone can talk to Hashem without being distracted.
5. Know how meaningful and important it is that you have chosen to come to Shul. Your presence is significant and greatly enhances the experience for everyone else.
